Director estadounidense nacido en Kingston. Inició su carrera como ayudante de Roger Corman. Su cine, nostálgico y crepuscular, es deudor de algunos de sus ilustres predecesores (El héroe anda suelto, 1968; La última sesión, 1971; Máscara, 1985; Texasville, 1990; Esa cosa llamada amor, 1993). También ha trabajado para la televisión en To Sir with Love (1996), The Price of Heaven (1997), Naked City: A Killer Christmas (1998) y A Saintly Switch (1999).
